Bueno Profile Rio Bueno is reputed to be the first place that Christopher Columbus landed in Jamaica , an honour it shares with Discovery Bay. Located near the border of St. Ann and Trelawny. Rio Bueno is an under-developed, fishing community, its architecture is reminiscent of an old English village. There is little commercial activity in the town; and although it is reportedly linked to several prominent historical events, its value as a heritage site has not been exploited. The ability of Rio Bueno to capitalize on the boom in tourism is limited, as the route for the North Coast Highway by-passes the town. |

Hope for Rio Bueno The expansion of port operations and a hardware distribution hub by Tank-Weld is expected to: • Generate direct employment for an estimated 100 persons. • Stimulate social and economic activity in Rio Bueno. • Open up the town and neighbouring communities to other investors, the wider public and new growth opportunities. • The Tank Weld philosophy on corporate citizenship will make a special impact over time on the heritage and community facilities of the town. This includes the participation in the restoration of heritage sites and a general interest in supporting community sports. There is a real opportunity for a Rio Bueno fish festival event to develop |

Economic Benefits The Tank-Weld investment also promises significant spin-offs and benefits for the Jamaican national economy. The location of a major steel, lumber and cement distribution centre on the North Coast will effect real savings in transportation cost and the island energy bill; it will ease congestions on the busy south to north corridor and decrease wear and tear on the roads. The proximity, reliability and cost efficiency of supplies of steel, lumber and cement will make a positive difference to the construction industry in that end of the island. The anticipated gains include: • Diversification of the tourism-based North Coast economy • Reduction in traffic congestion and fuel and vehicle maintenance costs incurred from transporting building material by the roadway from the Corporate Area to the northern and western ends of the island. • Savings in the overall oil import bill to meet production and transportation expenses. • Convenient and cost-efficient product delivery to traders in Northern and Western Jamaica • Access to alternative world supplies of quality cement, lumber and steel to support the construction boom • New sources of Government revenue from increased business activity in the host community. |
